Man in the Sky
by. Gabe Schmittou

I wake up lost, like a child taken from his mother.
I find myself covered in blood and shattered glass
right next to my dead lover.

As paramedics pull me from the wreck,
pains shoot up my entire left side.
They try to look hopeful, but it was easy to tell:
I was not going to make this long ride.

They speed, and I begin to look around.
I turn to him. He looks helpless like a rag doll.
I weep and slowly slip away...
But then the paramedics bring me back to misery.

I don’t want to live,
not even another day.
Every chance I get to climb the that staircase to heaven,
that staircase to my one true love,
they pull me farther away
with blood running down my face.
I begin to see his loving face.
I follow him up through the clouds to be with the man in the sky.

This time, they cannot save me.
As hard as they try,
I’m already gone,
hidden in the clouds.
