Around the beginning of time, there was a lovely family in a small cottage in Ticino, Switzerland. Their home was surrounded by the mysterious, beautiful mountains. Cold snow filled the far-away tips of the mountains because of the cold-hearted old man who wanted those who feel love to stay off his territory, and if they didn’t, then he would make their body feel as cold as his soul. Ticino was filled with nothing but happiness and love. The young child of the lovely family Aurora was a beautiful, young girl with brown eyes that shone. She was loving, sweet, ambitious girl. She always seemed to attach herself to those who truly needed her. She would walk up to the homeless on the streets and give them something of value to help them, bring the lost home, and cheer up those who are down.
One person she had always been fascinated with helping was the old man on the mountain tops. Ridiculous, right? Everyone else thought so too, but with the amount of ambition she had, nothing could keep her away from doing what she felt she needed to do. She got on her unicorn and rode the beast all the way to the top. When she made it up there, she noticed the old man was gone and had taken the cold with him. She had forgotten of his love of traveling. Bothered by the fact that she had wasted her time, she went into his home to make herself a hot cup of tea. She walked in, made and poured herself a cup, and relaxed after her long journey up the mountains. While drinking her tea, she needed something to read, so she grabbed the old man’s notebook off of his desk. When Aurora opened the book, she discovered that all of his journeys had been recorded in it. The one that really caught her eye was the area near the North Pole in North America where most days were dark because of the tilt of the Earth.
Many have tried and failed to journey through that area because of the darkness and cold that the old man had brought. Aurora couldn’t just sit there; she had to do something. She hopped on her unicorn and traveled back down the mountain into town. Aurora then sent the word around to have all citizens, aware of what she needed to do to help build a ship to travel from Switzerland to the North Pole area. It took four months to build the enormous, beautiful ship, but it was one that she could call her own.
Aurora got in the ship with her unicorn and carefully chosen shipmates, and she went off on the journey to light the world up just a little more than it was already lit.
“Alright men! You are all aware of what I will be doing on this journey, right?” questioned Aurora to all of her shipmates.
“Not exactly, ma’am,” said one of the men.
“I am going to light the way for those who are stranded in the cold with beautiful colors that inspire them and guide them home.” The shipmates loved the idea, so with no more questions asked, they continued their journey. After two months of life on the sea, they finally made it to their destination.
Aurora and her unicorn got out alone, for the shipmates have already done what they needed to do, and they rode off into the darkness. They were in such great danger. They could not see anything at all, just the stars in the dark sky. They were like little holes in the sky, struggling to grow larger and light up the dark, cold place. In the silence they had been already used to, they heard the sound of something walking toward them. Their fear was unbelievable, their bravery had suddenly faded. As they heard it slowly come closer and closer after every step, the stallion stood up on two hooves, kicked his feet up, and his horn lit up. They saw the beast. Aurora and the unicorn were shocked and didn’t realize the unicorn had such power. He charged at the beast, which seemed to be a polar bear that was getting ready to take a bite out of Aurora. The unicorn cut into the bear's chest with his arm.
The beast died while pinned upon a large piece of ice by the stallion’s horn impaling its chest. The unicorn was stuck. He kept having to kick and jerk back to escape the ice until he finally did. His horn had been stuck in the ice and came off his head, and he was absolutely devastated. Aurora felt awful and didn’t know what to do because now, when all unicorns die off and only her colts are left, they will be hornless.
The incident had brought down their spirit, so Aurora jerked the horn out of the ice and they turned around and gave up. On their way back to the ship, the horn started to shake in Aurora’s hand. Aurora stopped and observed the horn. It shook her more until she finally dropped it because it had shaken her whole body. Aurora and her unicorn watched as it suddenly started to light up every color you could imagine.
“Look! Look! It shall be used as a wand now!” Aurora hollered in amazement. She picked up what was now her wand and pointed it toward the sky. The wand blew out several colorful lights into the sky in a magical way that Aurora had always dreamed about. They did it. Aurora and her stallion have created the Aurora Northern Lights to guide travelers home.
